With the World Cup in full swing, and Wimbledon underway it is a great summer for those of us who like watching sports.

But, how about playing them? If you’re planning a game of football in the local park, or trying your hand at tennis here’s our top tips on how you can look after your health while enjoying getting active.

Staying Hydrated

We all know we should try to stay hydrated, but it’s particularly important when you exercise. This is because while you exercise you can lose fluid mainly through sweating and breathing1. If you don’t drink enough to top up your fluid levels, you could become dehydrated.

Make sure to drink plenty of water before you start exercising and also bring a bottle of water with you when you’re exercising.

Looking after your skin

If you’re spending a lot of time in the sun during your workout you should make sure to look after your skin, particularly in summer. Here are some top tips so you can make the most of your sun cream:

  • Use an amount of sun cream equivalent to the size of a golf ball or 6 teaspoons to cover your entire body
  • Drink plenty of water. Dehydrated skin is more prone to sun damage
  • Reapply sun cream after you’ve finished exercising
  • Don’t forget your ears!
  • Don’t forget to protect your eyes! Choose sunglasses that protect your eyes against UV

Looking for sun cream to use? Why not try:

Solero Sun Lotion SPF 30 200ml Triple defense protection with; UVA, UVB & IR-A rays, and is water resistant.

It helps prevent premature skin ageing and sun-induced wrinkles, when used regularly and moisturises to keep skin hydrated soft and supple.

Want something for after you’ve been exercising in the sun? Why not try:

Allergy Relief

Exercising outdoors in the sun can be really enjoyable, but not if you experience hay fever or other allergies. But having hay fever shouldn’t mean you need to stay inside during the summer. Here are our top tips to avoid allergies:

  • Wear wraparound sunglasses when you are outdoors to help keep pollen out of your eyes. This will help to reduce itchiness.
  • Rub a small amount of Vaseline into your lower nostrils – this may seem strange but it can help to stop pollen spores entering your nasal passages.
  • Find the right allergy relief for you, and your symptoms, not sure which ones to choose from? Visit your local LloydsPharmacy and talk to one of our pharmacists, or check out our guide to choosing the right allergy relief for you.
In case of injuries

Even the top athletes get injured from time to time, but that shouldn’t put you off exercising. Instead, try to be prepared so you can get on with your game without worrying.

Try to bring a first aid kit with you when you’re out and about to treat and minor injuries easily, most items for a good first aid kit will be available at your local LloydsPharmacy or LloydsPharmacy.com.
