How can vitamin E help your skin?

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble, essential nutrient with anti-inflammatory properties (1). It helps your body strengthen its natural defence against illness and infection and helps maintain healthy skin and eyes (2).

It may also be beneficial in helping to reduce any UV damage to the skin (1).

Other vitamins to help your skin

Vitamin E isn’t the only vitamin that helps keep your skin looking and feeling it’s best. Vitamins D, C, K and B are all important in keeping your skin healthy (1). The best way to get the vitamins you need is to eat a wide range of healthy foods, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and lean protein sources.

Sources of vitamin E in your diet:

Vitamin E is found in:

  • Plant oils: such as soya, corn and olive oil
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Wheatgerm: found in cereals and cereal products

Men need 4mg of vitamin E a day and women need 3mg (2). For most of this, you should get enough vitamin E from your diet. It can be absorbed even better when combined with vitamin C (1).

Should you take a vitamin E supplement?

You should be able to get all the vitamin E from eating a varied and balanced diet. But if you’re concerned the Department of Health and Social Care suggests that taking 540mg or less a day of vitamin E supplements is unlikely to cause any harm (2). You could try:

Vitamin E in Skincare:

Vitamin E is available in many skincare products including sun creams, moisturisers and masks. It is easily absorbed into the skin.

Applying vitamin E as part of these products directly to your skin may increase the amount of it stored within the sebaceous glands. These are tiny glands found near the surface of your skin.
