Many of us will have heard about probiotics but do we really know what they do and the benefits of taking them? Our guess is probably not for most people. As we launch a brand NEW probiotic called Beneffect (exclusive to LloydsPharmacy), we thought this was as good a time as any to share guidance on this topic.
What are probiotics?
Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are usually found in yoghurts or food supplements, and are often described as ‘good’ or ‘friendly’ bacteria. They can help restore the natural balance of your gut bacteria when it has been disrupted.
What are the benefits of taking Probiotics?
Studies have shown strong evidence that Probiotics can have a positive impact on symptoms of Antibiotic-associated Diarrhoea.
There may also be benefit to people with:
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Lactose intolerance
Can I take probiotics whilst on antibiotics?
Antibiotics can strip away both your good & bad bacteria, resulting in an imbalance of the gastrointestinal tract & suppressing of the immune system. This means that the use of antibiotics both on a short term & long term basis can be associated with a number of side effects including nausea, vomiting & diarrhoea. Probiotics help to replace the good bacteria antibiotics can strip away.
