This is a condition that disturbs your normal breathing pattern while you sleep. Sleep apnoea can cause loud snoring and a reduction of the amount of oxygen in your bloodstream because your breathing is being interrupted by gasping or snorting. Because there isn’t enough oxygen in your blood, this will cause you to wake up throughout the night, which means you won’t be getting enough deep sleep.
If a partner, friend or family member notices you are having some breathing problems in your sleep, the best thing to do is to see your GP. There’s a variety of treatments available which could help you sleep better, and there are some lifestyle changes they may recommend such as losing weight, cutting down on alcohol or simply sleeping on your side.
A persistent low mood can drain your energy in two main ways. One way is that you may find it difficult to fall asleep at night, or you may wake up very early in the morning and can’t get back to sleep again. Your GP is the best person to talk to as they can advise you about the various treatments for depression, including talking therapy, medication such as antidepressants or a combination of the two.
Seasonal Affective Disorder:
This is a type of depression that comes and goes depending on the season. The symptoms tend to start during the autumn and then become worse during December, January and February. When spring arrives most people who live with SAD find their symptoms start to improve and eventually go away altogether. A drop in mood isn’t the only sign of SAD; it can cause low energy, often making you want to sleep for longer than normal.
If you think you might have SAD, speak to your neighbourhood pharmacist for advice. Treatments can include light therapy where a special light box is used to stimulate sunlight.
Type 2 Diabetes:
Feeling tired is one of the main symptoms of Type 2 diabetes, though you may also feel thirsty and a need to go to the toilet frequently.
