Your morning skincare routine:

Although the basics of a morning and evening skincare routine will be the same, your skin needs slightly different things when you wake up and when you go to sleep. Here’s what your morning routine should include:

Start with cleansing

To start of your morning skincare routine, it’s best to wash your face. This removes any oils or dirt which can help your skin avoid blockages which can cause acne (1). You should look for a cleanser that suits your skin’s type.

If you’re not sure what your skin type is, you could try: Skin Academy zero face wash 100mlSkin Academy Zero Face Wash This is a vegan friendly skin was that uses sacha inchi and coconut oils to hydrate your skin, leaving it feeling soft and smooth.

Time to tone

Toners help to remove any oils or dirt that are still on your skin after cleansing.  They can also help the rest of your skincare products to absorb. If you have sensitive skin, look for a toner with hydrating ingredients.

Apply your serum

If you want to use a facial serum, this is the best time to apply it. These are designed to tackle specific skin concerns, so you’ll need to think about what is right for you. If you want to tackle acne, for example, you might want to use a serum that had vitamin C to reduce redness and inflation.

Serums are lighter than moisturisers so they can penetrate deeper into your skin, without it feeling greasy.

Moisturise

Now it’s time to apply your moisturiser, this helps hydrate your skin leaving it feeling soft. There are many moisturisers available, and you might find you need a different one in the winter and in the summer (more on winter skincare here).

Don’t forget SPF

UV rays found in sunlight are the main causes of skin ageing and can cause skin cancer (2). To help protect yourself make sure to apply sun cream in the morning and just before you go out. For more advice on sun cream and SPF, here’s our blog on sun protection at home.

How to look after your skin before bed

Our bodies repair themselves over night, so here’s how to make the most of that time with a night-time skin care routine.

Remove any make up, or dirt and oils from the day

Like your morning routine, you should cleanse your skin with your chosen cleanser or face wash at night. This helps to remove any makeup you were wearing, and any residue on your skin from the day.

Time to exfoliate

Exfoliating your skin can help get rid of dead skin cells leaving your skin feeling nourished and soft.

Pamper yourself with a face mask

If you’re using a face mask in the evening, you should use it after your usual cleanser to make sure your skin is clean, then follow up with the rest of your routine. It depends on the type of mask you’re using to how often you should use it, but generally you might want to do a mask once or twice a week.

Use a toner

Like in the morning, a toner helps to remove any dirt and oils left on your skin after cleansing. To save yourself some money, you can use the same toner in the morning and evening.

Hydrate your face and eyes

If your eyes are a focus area, this is the time to apply your eye cream. Try to focus on what your specific concerns, for example if your eyes tend to be puffy use a cream or serum that targets puffiness.
