I’m taking my 1 year old son abroad on holiday for the first time – how do I protect him from the sun?
Use a high SPF lotion, never less than SPF 30, and apply regularly throughout the day. Apply to all exposed skin and don’t forget their shoulders, nose, ears, cheeks and tops of their feet. Always use a sun lotion that protects against UV-A and UV-B rays and apply even on cloudy days. Apply water resistant sun lotion if your child is going into the water, and re-apply
after towelling to ensure protection.
If you can, encourage your child to play in a shaded area, especially between 11am and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest. When playing in the sun, make sure they wear a hat that shades their face and neck; this could also be worn in a swimming pool. Protect your child further by putting them in loose fitting, cotton clothing such as a baggy t-shirt with sleeves.
