Whether you are looking for a wheelchair for yourself to take out and about when you get a little tired, or you are looking for one for a loved one – it’s important to know a little about wheelchairs.

We’ve put together a handy guide to help you understand all of the things you may need to consider.

Self-propelled or transit?

If you want to get around on your own, choose a chair with push rims on the outside of the wheels. The larger the rear wheel
diameter, the more comfortable the ride. So even if you prefer to be pushed, you might  prefer a self propel wheelchair. Transit wheelchairs are ideal for those who maybe do not have the strength to use the wheel rims and allow them to be pushed by a friend, carer or loved one.

Electric or not?

An electric chair means you’re able to travel further without your arms getting tired. However, electric chairs tend to be heavier and larger so consider access to your home and storage.

Do you need it to be foldable?

Foldable chairs easily fit into a car boot for days out and require less storage space at home.

Solid tyres or pneumatic?

Pneumatic tyres are ideal for uneven terrain and solid tyres are great for town use. Solid tyres also give extra peace of mind as they can’t be punctured. Consider where you will be mostly using the wheelchair and decide on a tyre from that.

Getting in and out

The lower the seat of the wheelchair, the easier it is to get in and out independently. A higher seat is better if you need assistance in transfer. Swing away legrests and flip-up arms make standing transfers easier.

Test it out

If possible, it’s advised that you should try out the wheelchair before you purchase it. You able to familiarise yourself with it’s features and get any advice you may need.
