Pure plant oils are at the heart of natural beauty; they’ve been used to care for skin for thousands of years. At Trilogy, we love Certified Organic Rosehip Oil for its simplicity, natural affinity with the skin and the concentrated goodness it contains.

Many women – and men, for that matter – are becoming concerned at the chemical overload inherent in our modern world and are looking for simpler, more natural alternatives to their favorite products. There is a huge and growing demand for skincare which is non-GMO and free from petrochemicals and silicone oils.

Innovation in natural and organic ingredients and technology has moved so rapidly in recent years that you can get the same, or indeed better, results without resorting to synthetics. There are some incredibly effective botanical ingredients, backed up with strong clinical data, which simply weren’t available a few years ago.

Why are beauty oils so special?

Beauty oils are a great way of delivering active ingredients to your skin. Many pure plant oils extracted from nuts, seeds and fruit are beneficial and completely compatible with the skin, sinking in quickly, nourishing and hydrating. They also provide a protective, yet invisible barrier which helps prevent moisture loss and guards against the drying effects of the environment. And they’re so simple to incorporate into your skincare regime.

Can people with oily skin use facial oils?

Often people with oily skin think they can’t use facial oils, because it might make their skin even oilier. In fact, everybody can use plant-based beauty oils.

While mineral oils can leave an oily residue and clog pores, pure plant oils have a finer molecular structure and many are similar in design to our own natural skin oil (sebum). Superfine oils like rosehip are readily accepted and absorbed by the skin, won’t clog or irritate pores and help to promote normal, healthy skin cell function.

Rosehip oil can help to regulate the skin’s own oil production so, far from causing breakouts, it can actually be beneficial for rebalancing oily skin. Plant oils are excellent for dry skin, delivering much needed hydration and nourishment, and people with sensitive skin often find them less irritating than mineral versions.

What are some oils you would recommend?

There are many oils to choose from, but these are some of our favorites:

  • Rosehip oil (obviously!): it’s super-rich in essential fatty acids (omegas 3 & 6) and fatty acids (omega 9), intensely nourishing and hydrating, and one of the best for helping repair and rejuvenate skin. Independent clinical studies have shown Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil to be highly effective at treating scars, stretch marks, fine lines, wrinkles and dry and dehydrated skin.
  • Mare maintenance of hula oil: full of nutritional goodness, this silky smooth oil is revered for its skin healing and preservative properties. It’s nourishing and naturally rich in antioxidants, so it hydrates, softens and revitalises skin while helping to protect from free radical damage. It’s especially rich in oleic acid, which is essential to healthy looking skin. You’ll find it in Trilogy Everything Balm and several of our moisturisers too.
  • Tamanu oil: renowned for its intensely moisturising, hydrating and skin healing properties, tamanu oil assists cell regeneration, promoting the formation of new skin and helping to smooth wrinkles. It has anti-inflammatory properties, making it good for soothing sunburn and sensitive skin. It’s also fantastic as restoring a radiant glow to the complexion, which is why it’s a key ingredient in our new certified organic Trilogy Age-Proof CoQ10 Booster Oil.

How should they be used (after a cleanser but before moisturiser? Should they replace your moisturiser?

Oils can be used in conjunction with a moisturiser or instead of, depending on your skin’s needs. You can use oils alone, under your moisturiser, or even mixed into it. If you’ve very dry skin, you’ll probably want to be using both, but we try not to be too prescriptive at Trilogy as we believe you’re the expert when it comes to your own skin.

It’s best to apply your beauty oil after cleansing when the skin is still slightly damp, as it helps absorption and traps extra moisture in the skin. We recommend 2-3 drops, warmed between the fingertips and massaged into the face, neck and décolletage. Because pure plant oils are so full of goodness, your skin only needs a small amount. If you have an oily residue on your skin, you’re probably using too much!
